GOAL: Increase employee engagement in sustainability efforts
Creating a culture of sustainability at First National
Sustainability is a team effort, and we believe that when our employees are informed and inspired, great things happen. We are committed to making sustainability accessible and actionable for everyone at FNBO, whether that means attending a learning event, sorting waste correctly, or simply sharing what you know with a colleague. Together, we are building a culture where sustainability is part of how we work every day.
What’s Driving Our Progress to Date
Our progress on employee engagement is driven by three interconnected strategies that have helped grow awareness and action across the organization.
- Ongoing communications and reporting keep sustainability visible and top of mind across the organization.
- We regularly share sustainability updates through television slides at the Tower, social media posts, and intranet articles.
- Our environmental sustainability efforts are featured in the annual Impact by FNBO report, ensuring our progress is shared with the broader public. You can read our most recent work in the 2025 Impact Report.
- Education and learning lay the foundation for meaningful employee participation.
- In 2022, we partnered with Verdis Group to host four lunch and learn sessions covering waste management, active commuting, and individual climate action. Recordings and slides remain available on the Intranet under the Sustainability tab.
- We have also added a dedicated sustainability tab to the Impact by FNBO Intranet page, which includes an individual action toolkit, webinar recordings, and guidance on how to sort waste correctly under our recycling program.
- Engagement opportunities bring our sustainability goals to life through friendly, peer-driven action. From April to July 2023, we launched the EcoChallenge platform, empowering employees to take action and share their efforts with colleagues. Over 70 individuals participated, collectively saving 287 pounds of CO2 and 870 gallons of water, logging 246 miles of sustainable commuting, and spending 22 hours learning about sustainability topics. We will continue to explore new ways to engage employees in sustainability efforts going forward.
