GOAL: Zero waste. Increase diversion rate to 90% by 2035
Goal update
Baseline (2020): 35%*
2024: 26%
Goal: 90%**
*Waste data requires several assumptions including volume-weight conversions and projecting data for branches with missing data. Actual diversion rate may differ.
** Goal is for corporate locations only. First National is committed to improving the diversion rate of all branches by ensuring, at a minimum, robust recycling infrastructure.
Annual savings: 2.5 million pounds of waste diverted from the landfill
First National diverts material away from the landfill through a robust recycling program.
Recent Efforts
Landfill Diversion
Since the baseline year, we have made several updates to the Tower, including updated comprehensive waste signage, targeted communications, and changes to purchasing practices. In addition, our food and hospitality partner, Eurest, supported our goals by eliminating styrofoam and helping us to transition to compostable serviceware in our food areas. 539.9 tons of waste were diverted from landfills in 2024, equivalent to 5,399 ATMs.
Tower Waste Study & Engagement
First National is taking a data-informed approach to reducing waste. In July 2024, facilities staff weighed all waste produced at the Tower to understand its current diversion rate. Once this study has been completed, the information will be used to implement additional waste reduction measures to meet a 90% diversion rate.
Centralized Waste and Recycling
With the addition of the new recycling program, we are also moving to a centralized waste collection system, which is a best practice for reducing waste. With stations placed in convenient community access points and fewer individual waste bins, we can save on plastic waste and increase our diversion rate.
Comprehensive Waste Streams in Corporate Buildings
A recycling program was launched in our Corporate Buildings in March 2022 and continues to be rolled out in other locations. At the Tower, this program has allowed us to repurpose a landfill compactor to collect recycling, with landfill waste decreasing significantly. As we move forward, we will be analyzing Retail locations in an effort to standardize, streamline, and promote recycling across the board. Below are the streams being captured for diversion from the landfill:
- Mixed recycling (plastic, paper, cardboard, aluminum)
- Compost (food waste, paper towels)
- Hefty EnergyBag (soft plastics, styrofoam, non-recyclable hard plastics like cutlery)
Education and engagement around the recycling program have helped employees transition to the new system smoothly.
Eliminating Styrofoam
Our catalog will no longer include styrofoam as we continue our phased elimination of these products.
Upcoming Projects
Striving for Zero Waste
First National Bank of Omaha is committed to achieving a 90% corporate waste diversion rate by 2035. By implementing new data collection, waste monitoring protocols, and modified onsite waste collection systems, FNBO has reduced waste and expanded compost programs. Hefty ReNew and mixed recycling streams divert additional material from the landfill. FNBO continues to learn and implement new best practices for waste reduction and diversion across its footprint.
Business Park Infrastructure Update
Business Park is currently getting its waste infrastructure (streams, bins, and signage) updated throughout the building. Stay tuned for the impact of this transition!
Expand Waste Systems
First National plans to roll out the new waste system to all corporate locations and expand waste streams at branch locations.
How to support this goal while you work
- Properly sort your waste while at work
- Bring reusable cups, utensils, etc. to work
- Think twice before printing, but if you do need to print, print double sided
- Before buying something new, see if something is already in the building
